Is online betting legal in India?

India does not have one simple yes or no answer. The Public Gambling Act of 1867 was written long before the internet, and gambling has traditionally been left to individual states to regulate.

That changed in August 2025, when Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act. The Act prohibits offering, facilitating and advertising online money games, a category that includes betting on sports. Separately, states such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have passed their own laws against online gambling.

What does this mean for Powerplay247 players?
